UT-Battelle, LLC, acting under its Prime Contract No. DE-AC05-00OR22725 with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) for the management and operation of Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL), is seeking commercialization partners for a promising early stage invention entitled "Cobalt-Free Layered Oxide Cathodes". Technology Summary: The adoption of electric vehicles is currently limited by the cost and energy density of Li-ion batteries. Nickel-rich layered oxides are promising cathode materials to address these issues due to their high reversible capacities ( > 200 mAh/g). Recent efforts have focused on formulations with small amounts of cobalt, manganese, and aluminum for better structural stability, safety, and cycle life, but cobalt remains an expensive component. The Ni-rich cathode material in this invention replaces cobalt with a different element, decreasing the cost and increasing the capacity (~220 mAh/g) without compromising electrochemical performance. This is a part of a portfolio of energy storage technologies available for licensing. More information about this portfolio may be found at https://storagetechnologies.ornl.gov .
