A -- Dynamics of Health, Aging and Body Composition (Health ABC) Coordinating Unit

The National Institute on Aging, National Institutes of Health, intends to resolicit a current contract with the Regents of the University of California to continue the study of disease and disability onset in an old age cohort established in the Health ABC Study. This is a unique scientific opportunity to take advantage of an established epidemiologic cohort on which extensive data has been obtained. This opportunity also takes advantage of the research study management infrastructure, such as specialized data entry, quality control, and data management systems developed to support the data collected in the study, already developed in the existing Health ABC Coordinating Center contract (N01-AG-6-2106) with University of California, San Francisco. The key elements of this project include: twice yearly phone interviews of functional and cognitive status performed with the same telephone instrument used in the ten years of the study; continued ascertainment of disease and disability endpoints and continued adjudication of cause-of-death; and maintenance of the biorepository. Inherent duplication of cost to the Government that is not expected to be recovered through competition makes competition unfeasible for this resolicitation. See Numbered Note 22.
