Intent to award single source award to Oregon State University for Genetic ID of putative spring run juvenile Chinook salmon from Clear and Battle Creek, upper Sacramento River, California. Genetic analysis techniques used to identify the spring-run Chinook life history type have only recently become available for the upper Sacramento River and its tributaries. These techniques were developed by Dr. Michael A. Banks, a Marine Fisheries Geneticist and Assistant Professor in the Department of Fisheries and Wildlife, Oregon State University. Dr Banks has worked on many projects to distinguish the runs of Chinook in the Central Valley including an ongoing study funded by the Department of Water Resources (DWR). Dr. Banks is currently the only researcher capable of performing the genetic analysis (Task 1) with the markers developed by his lab. In addition Dr Banks is the only researcher capable of performing the assessment of relationships (Task 2) because the goal of this project is linked to Dr Banks ongoing DWR study. The goal of this project is to assess the genetic relationship of juvenile Chinook from Clear Creek and Battle Creek to those from other Central Valley streams, which is only possible by integrating the assessment with findings from the DWR study.
