NOTICE OF INTENT the Fish and Wildlife Service intends to award a single source contract to the Desert Fishes Council of Bishop California forGenetic Analysis of ESA Lamprey. The primary objective of the phylogeographic analysis is to identify patterns of genetic variation and reproductive isolation of Pacific lamprey (Lampetra tridentata) populations from Southern California to the Fraser River, British Columbia. Samples will be gathered and analyzed to investigate genetic variation within and between drainages along the entire coast. This information will be utilized to support decision-makers in proper management of the species and its diversity. The genetics database will be analyzed by Damon Goodman for relationships between populations and geographic patterns along the coast. Identified patterns will then be used to develop management recommendations with implications for distinct population segment designation under the Endangered Species Act. Management recommendations for the lamprey will be directed toward preservation of current and potential biodiversity. Award Date: August 26, 2004.
