The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Ventura Fish and Wildlife Service, Ventura, California has a requirement to procure services for the research and development of flipper tags for the sea otter. Desert Star Systems, Inc. has engineering and manufacturing experience and ability with research development. They also have access to sea otter researchers (for collaboration and information exchange) and captive live sea otters and are located at Monterey Bay Aquarium (for testing iterations of tag designs). It is a requirement to be located in the vicinity of Santa Cruz and Monterey, California for close collaboration with researchers and for testing of prototypes on captive live sea otters. This is development of a light, durable, power-generating flipper tag into which instruments can be incorporated. These tags will designed to the size, shape, and weight that sea otters will tolerate and made with appropriate bouyant non-toxic material withstanding chewing and contains solar energy electronics to determine animal's position.
