TECHNOLOGY TRANSFER OPPORTUNITY: Thermal and Environmental Barrier Coating System (LEW-TOPS-43)

NASA's Technology Transfer Program solicits inquiries from companies interested in obtaining license rights to commercialize, manufacture and market the following technology. License rights may be issued on an exclusive or nonexclusive basis and may include specific fields of use. NASA provides no funding in conjunction with these potential licenses . THE TECHNOLOGY: High temperature and high heat flux operating environments can lead to premature failure of components due to higher internal stresses, increased materials phase instability, and thermal oxidation. A cutting-edge environmental barrier coating (EBC) system was developed at NASA's Glenn Research Center to battle premature component failure. This EBC system has advanced multi-component compositions arranged to form thermodynamically stable, multi-scale composites with superior performance as compared to the current state-of-the-art silicon bond coat. The design of the advanced barrier coating system significantly enhances the temperature stability, strength, toughness, and durability of the coating in high temperature operating conditions while still allowing the coatings to be processed using current advanced coating processing methods. These coating systems are particularly suited for high temperature silicon-based ceramic and ceramic matrix composite components.
