This is a notice of intent to award a sole source order to the Alaska Mountain Safety Center to provide instructors knowledgeable in winter survival techniques. The purpose of the training is to train new snow surveyors working in a snow survey program how to safely measure the snowpack under a variety of winter conditions. An integral part of the training involves knowledge of avalanche conditions, terrain and avoidance. The training modules must be geared in accordance with the NRCS Snow Survey policy. The training is scheduled to take place in Bend Oregon January 10-15, 2010. Sessions will cover Outfitting for the Field, Body Heat and Clothing Selection, Equipment and Supplies, Physical Conditioning, Survival in the Snow, Survival Pack, Preparedness - Physical and Mental, Shelter Construction, Assistance at Bivouac, Helicopter Safety and Procedures, and Map, Compass & GPS Orientation. The contractor must provide all items necessary to instruct this course including course materials, training aids, static displays, and visual aids.
