The Department of Veterans Affairs Network Contracting Office 22, on behalf of the VA Greater Los Angeles Healthcare System (VAGLAHS) is seeking a Contractor to provide Radiation Therapy Technologists to the Radiation Therapy Department of the VAGLAHS, 11301 Wilshire Boulevard, Los Angeles, CA 90073. The impending requirement is for approximately five (5) FTE Radiation Therapists to begin on or about December 1, 2014. Contract providers shall meet the following qualifications and experience: a. Completion of a course of study in Radiation Therapy Technology approved by the American Registry of Radiological Technology or B.S. degree in Health Sciences with training and experience in Radiation Therapy. Candidates with two years as a Certified Radiologic Technologist and one additional year in an Accredited School of Radiation Therapy with subsequent accreditation are also acceptable. b. At least three years of experience as a radiation therapist within the past five years. c. Current certification with the American Registry of Radiological Technology (ARRT) in Therapeutic Radiological Technology, and a state license from the Department of Public Health, Radiologic Health Branch. d. Current Basic Life Support (BLS) Certificate. e. Ability to calculate sums, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, volume, and basic algebra. f. Competence in modern treatment principle and techniques, including kV and CBCT imaging procedures, and in administering various forms of ionizing radiation under the direction of the radiation oncologists. g. Ability to read, understand and implement computer generated treatment plans. 3. In addition, contracted radiation therapists are required to have the following knowledge, skills, and abilities: a. Thorough knowledge of all therapy units used to administer external beam treatments. Understands the principles of Brachytherapy with radioactive materials. b. Ability to run a CT scanner for treatment simulation and be familiar with the contrast agents that are used in the CT procedures. c. Thorough knowledge of radiation safety standards and current Federal/State regulations. Understands and exercises the principle of ALARA. d. Knowledge of basic radiation physics; the skill of operating a radiation treatment machine and performing its routine daily QA as set by the physicist. e. Knowledge of physiology and anatomy; ability to acquire the necessary images for accurate patient positioning and treatment volume. f. Knowledge of fabricating lead blocks, bolus materials and molds for proper shielding. g. Knowledge of basic nursing practices relating to radiation therapy patients; ability to operate suction machines and oxygen units. h. Knowledge of proper storage of radioactive materials. i. Ability to sustain long periods of standing and walking at work, occasional bending and carrying of moderate to heavy items, such as lead blocks, and transporting patients from wheelchair or gurney to treatment couch. 4.
