The U.S. Army Research Laboratory is conducting a market investigation to identify possible sources of a corrosion resistant aluminum alloy with improved ballistics for armor applications. This improved armor plate must have corrosion resistance equa l to or better than AA5083-H131 as well as ballistic performance comparable or better than AA7039-T64. In addition, the alloy must exhibit good welding characteristics to include compatibility with existing AA5083-H131 and AA7039-T64 armor materials field ed. The aluminum armor plate will be supplied for a Government conducted test and evaluation program. The plate will be subjected to ballistic evaluation, corrosion testing to include coatings compatibility, accelerated corrosion testing, adhesion, and su sceptibility to stress corrosion cracking. Evaluation of welds will include, weldability with AA5183 weldment, mechanical/strength tests of the weld and corrosion testing of welded sections. The system selected must already be in production to allow for th e above integration/test effort as detailed above.
