Institutional Collaboration Between The Institute Pasteur Of Madagascar And The Centers For Disease Control And Prevention On Malaria And Vector-Borne Diseases (U01)

This funding announcement addresses “Healthy People 2020” priority area(s) of infectious diseases surveillance, control, and program evaluation, and is in alignment with HHS/CDC/CGH’s performance goal(s) to protect Americans from Infectious Diseases, provide assistance to endemic-country ministries of health and research partners and conduct public health diplomacy. The CDC is a partner of the Roll Back Malaria (RBM) initiative, a partnership that seeks to support and coordinate global malaria program scale-up and evaluation efforts. As a partner, CDC has been building and working with numerous international networks, consortia, and partnerships to achieve the RBM targets. In addition CDC is a partner of the U.S. President’s Malaria Initiative (PMI) and the Global Health Initiative (GHI) as malaria prevention and control are major foreign assistance objectives of the U.S. government. The PMI was launched in June 2005 as a 5 year, $1.2 billion initiative to rapidly scale up malaria prevention and treatment interventions and reduce malaria-related mortality by 50% in 15 high-burden countries in sub-Saharan Africa. The 2008 Lantos-Hyde Act extended PMI through FY2014.The proposed program is intended to expand CDC’s network of collaborating institutes for both research and technical assistance to targeted African countries particularly Madagascar, with a focus on research synthesis, vector control and surveillance. Specifically, the proposed program is designed to follow core GHI principles and PMI program objectives by investing in country led malaria plans and strengthening health systems, increasing impact and efficiency through strategic coordination and programmatic integration, strengthening and leveraging key partnerships, improving monitoring and evaluation and promoting research and innovation.
